Independent summary

At Sage’s checked £599.95 promotional price, the current SES878 combines a 250g conical-burr grinder with 30 settings, 54mm portafilter, LCD grind-and-extraction guidance, PID temperature control and a claimed three-second ThermoJet heat-up. It is a complete first-day fresh-bean setup without a separate grinder, but remains a manual espresso workflow rather than a push-button automatic.

Best for

People who want a faster, more informative integrated-grinder workflow than the Barista Express but still want to learn manual espresso and milk texturing

Watch out for

Grinding is timed rather than weighed, and the machine does not distribute, tamp, attach the portafilter or texture milk for you. The integrated grinder saves space but cannot be upgraded independently. Its 35.4cm width and roughly 40.6cm height need more room than compact separate-machine routes. Cleaning includes prompted tablet backflushing, a separate three-stage descale and after-every-use steam-wand care; Sage says all machine parts must be hand-washed. Currys’ dishwasher-safe and automatic-tamping descriptions conflict with the official manual and should not be relied on. Independent cup quality, steam speed, noise, energy and reliability tests are pending, so no CoffeeScore is published.

What else you need

Required purchases, useful extras and later care supplies are kept separate. A connected product is an evidenced option—not a paid placement or the only valid choice.

Same-family decision · manufacturer stated

Which version fits your routine?

Both are hands-on 54mm espresso machines with an integrated 250g grinder and manual milk wand; the Barista Pro adds ThermoJet heating, an LCD workflow display and 30 external grind settings versus the Express record’s 16.

The Pro’s current £100 recorded premium buys speed, interface guidance and finer grind adjustment—not automatic tamping, automatic milk or independently proven better espresso. Both still require manual puck preparation and after-use cleaning.
Current model route · editorial inference

What should I consider instead?

Both combine a grinder with a portafilter workflow. The Sage keeps manual dosing decisions and manual milk with a fast LCD-led process; the Ninja adds a built-in scale, Barista Assist recommendations, longer coffee and cold-brew formats, and hands-free milk.

This is an editorial inference, not a direct manufacturer comparison. Ninja’s added assistance and drink formats do not prove better espresso, milk or reliability; Home Coffee Index has not independently tested either machine.

What should I consider instead?

Both combine a grinder and portafilter in one body. Sage uses button-and-LCD guidance with manual steam; De’Longhi uses 3.5-inch touchscreen guidance, automatic or manual milk, and cold-brew recipes.

This is an editorial inference, not a direct manufacturer comparison. Touchscreen guidance, automatic milk and recipe count do not establish better cup quality; published De’Longhi dimensions conflict, and both remain hands-on portafilter workflows.

Where published specifications conflict

We keep both claims visible because choosing one silently could lead to the wrong purchase. These are evidence issues, not product faults.

Water-tank capacity

unresolved · low impact

Why it matters: The 0.1L difference is unlikely to change a purchase, but it affects refill and running-cost calculations.

How we handle it: The database uses the current Sage product-page figure of 1.9L and keeps the manual's rounded 2L claim visible.

Depth

unresolved · high impact

Why it matters: A 6.3cm disagreement matters on shallow worktops and when allowing room to remove the water tank or hopper.

How we handle it: Space checks evaluate both published figures and cannot return an unqualified fit. Confirm the exact unit for a close-fit purchase.
